Bald Eagle Fishing

bald eagleBald eagles like grizzly bears are pretty good at catching a meal. This bald eagle manages to pick up a small salmon which will keep it’s young happy for a little while until they start to squawk again. Always hungry and never satisfied.

Hard to See

immature bald eagleJust out of it’s nest this bald eagle was hard to spot sitting in a tree. Lacking the white head and tail feathers, which do not start to appear until their third year, they blend with the trees. Note that even the beak and talons are not yet the bright yellow of an adult.

Bald Eagle Feeding

This bald eagle was coming in to pick up a rock fish to take back to it’s young in the nest behind our lodge. Know these facts because if you are visiting our lodge when there are rock fish leftover from a fishing trip we feed the eagle. Pavlov‘s dog psychology also works on bald eagle: whistle, wave a fish and good photo opportunity occurs.

Bald Eagle Feeding 18 of 20

eagle catching herringAs a guide I am always looking for seagull and duck activity to help locate a herring ball because herring balls attract whales and eagles. For this photo the ducks were feeding on herring and forcing them into a ball and near the surface providing a perfect opportunity for the bald eagle to feed. Experience and luck will put the guests in the right position but is is the skill of the photographer that produces the photo.

Bald Eagle on High 17 of 20

bald eagle in flightAnother good photo of a bald eagle overhead surveying the area looking for “the catch of the day”. It is common to see thirty of forty eagles sitting in trees or flying overhead but what is hard to do is to get tomorrows photo….

Bald Eagle Catching Bottom Fish

Another great photo by Glen bald eagle fishingone of Grizzly Bear Lodge’s guides. And how do I know that the eagle is picking up a bottom fish because I can see it in the water just in front of the eagle’s talons. Bottom fish have an “orange” colour so this is one that was left behind by a sports fisher and floated to the surface.

Fishing Lessons 1 of 2

immature bald eagle fishing

Learn by observation or by doing? In the case an adult bald eagle has come down and picked up dinner from the surface and a young eagle is right on its tail to try and duplicate the action. Tomorrow’s post less so….

The “Eagle Eye”

bald eagle at viewing stands

On the other side of the platform mentioned in yesterday’s post we have caught the attention of a bald eagle for the same reason. Wildlife is very aware and we become more aware the longer we spend in our “nature” surroundings. Moving up river when viewing grizzly bears in the spring we use an aluminum skiff and need to be very careful as an “eagle eye” is OK but the absence of grizzlies because of carelessness is not.

Twofer

Although bald eagle mate for life that does not mean they sit in the same tree together. While along the shore they are in hunting mode and in separate tree they cover a much larger area. A two for one eagle photo is not that common and the only thing that you can be sure about is that these two are a mating pair as eagle are very territorial.

Bald Eagle in Flight

Another great photo by Glen one of the camp guides and resident photographer. As guides we do have a little advantage over our guest in obtaining those unique photos. The advantage being the amount of time we have on the tours each summer but there is a down side in that we are running the boats so we also miss many opportunities.
