Bald eagles are only achieve their white headed between three and five years and prior to that they are able to sit in trees unnoticed. When soaring high an immature eagle is a little more noticeable. Still majestic with their wing span but something is missing.
Seeing a bald eagle swim is not a common sight on our wildlife tours maybe once or twice a summer. But this morning we saw three take a salmon to shore. An eagle will catch a fish in their talon that is too heavy for them to carry and they will swim to shore with it so they can eat it. They use a butterfly like swim stroke. In the first photo it is almost to the shore and the second show the eagle lifting the fish further up the shore. In this case its mate came down and took the salmon, as it was to exhausted to fight. The happy ending was that it did get to share the fish once it recovered.
I always try to find an interesting location to eat our picnic lunch on a whale watching tour. This day it was with a mother bald eagle that had just caught a small salmon and was sharing her catch with this years offspring. When any animal / bird has food and you are not intrusive they tend to ignore your presence so we enjoyed watching this exchange of food for about thirty minutes.
Bald eagles like grizzly bears are pretty good at catching a meal. This bald eagle manages to pick up a small salmon which will keep it’s young happy for a little while until they start to squawk again. Always hungry and never satisfied.
Just out of it’s nest this bald eagle was hard to spot sitting in a tree. Lacking the white head and tail feathers, which do not start to appear until their third year, they blend with the trees. Note that even the beak and talons are not yet the bright yellow of an adult.
As a guide I am always looking for seagull and duck activity to help locate a herring ball because herring balls attract whales and eagles. For this photo the ducks were feeding on herring and forcing them into a ball and near the surface providing a perfect opportunity for the bald eagle to feed. Experience and luck will put the guests in the right position but is is the skill of the photographer that produces the photo.
Another good photo of a bald eagle overhead surveying the area looking for “the catch of the day”. It is common to see thirty of forty eagles sitting in trees or flying overhead but what is hard to do is to get tomorrows photo….

one of Grizzly Bear Lodge’s guides. And how do I know that the eagle is picking up a bottom fish because I can see it in the water just in front of the eagle’s talons. Bottom fish have an “orange” colour so this is one that was left behind by a sports fisher and floated to the surface.
Learn by observation or by doing? In the case an adult bald eagle has come down and picked up dinner from the surface and a young eagle is right on its tail to try and duplicate the action. Tomorrow’s post less so….
Just like that another season has come to an end. We are grateful for all the wonderful staff and the guests this season. It was an excellent season and we are already looking forward to next May.
One of the highlights of the season was all of the new cubs out. It was awesome to see so many new cubs of the year and that is great news for our bear populations moving forward. We had great spring viewing and this continued through summer. On our river trips we started to see salmon arriving in August and enjoyed some great shoulder season viewing. The fish at the viewing platforms were a little late showing up this year, but viewing during late September at the platforms was great and the estuary viewing remained strong throughout the season.
Out in the whale watching world it was another year that saw large numbers of resident Orca who remained in the area right into October. The Humpback viewing was also great with large numbers feeding in Blackfish Sound. It is so amazing to have these magnificent animals back in our waters in such numbers.
Over the winter and spring we will be doing some repairs and maintenance. We rebuilt the front deck last spring, utilising cedar cut on site. We will continue with some siding, rooms improvements and hopefully a floating sauna ready for the start of our season.
2026 is already looking like a very busy season for us. We only have limited high season availability so please book early to ensure we have space for your group.
