The Lodge

All about Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge

There’s lots to see and do right here at the lodge. Some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities are right outside your window. The trip here on the float plane is a scenic one with lot’s of great photo opportunities.

Views from the Lodge

This is another photo taken right from the deck at Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge.  We spend a lot of time out in Knight Inlet and Johnstone Strait looking for bears and whales.  After a busy day viewing wildlife it is nice to head back to the lodge and take in the views.

Float Plane Trip to the Lodge

Your adventure actually begins even before you arrive at the lodge.  All of our guests fly in via floatplane from Campbell River on Vancouver Island.  It is a scenic 40 minute flight over countless islands and channels that dot the southern section of the Great Bear Rainforest.  The planes land on the water and park at the lodge’s dock.  No long lines at customs to deal with here!

Sometimes the Wildlife Comes to Us

humpback in fron of Grizzly Bear LodgeThis is a picture of a Humpback Whale.  We see Humpbacks quite often, so that in itself is not unusual.  What is unique about this picture is that it is taken from the front deck at the lodge cruising by only a few meters from the beach.  Sometimes it pays to stay put.

Fuel Delivery at Grizzly Bear Lodge

fuel deliveryThe morning sunrise turned into a beautiful day as we returned to the Lodge in time to watch fuel being pumped into our tanks. Diesel, gasoline and propane are delivered on a regular schedule. All groceries come in by plane or when staff returns from time off in town. There is no wasted room on the plane as it is the only way to get the fresh produce necessary for the camps famous meals and baking.

Uncommon Sunrise at Grizzly Bear Lodge

Grizzly Bear Lodge SunriseOnce or twice a month we have a picturesque sunrise. Although this shows the possibility of some fog, the water is calm and the fog will be gone by noon. The front deck of Grizzly Bear Lodge does face the east and thus a potential sunrise, however we do have a layer of marine cloud that appears most evenings. This is not a bad thing as it makes for better picture taking than bright morning sun.

Another day at Grizzly Bear Lodge 8 of 20

Knight Inlet sunriseThe photo time stamp says 6:16 am. And that means somebody was up before we were making coffee in the kitchen. In July the guides are up at 6:30 to make coffee and set the perishables on the table and then call the guests at 7:00 for an 8:00 departure. But depending on the “jet lag” some guests are up before the guides but we have yet to convince them to make the coffee.

First Evening Black Bear Tour 2 of 20

Tour boat riding

Arrival at the lodge: First is the assignment of room. Second snacks on the front deck made up of cheese and crackers; fresh prawns or dungeness crab; and drinks: coffee, tea, water or pop. While this is being consumed Angus will give a talk about the lodge and explain your itinerary. Third you are fitted with floater suites / survival suites which are designed to keep you warm and dry but hopefully never needed to keep you afloat. The boys in the boat are wearing these suites on the first evening black bear tour. This orientation trip to look for black bears, seals, bald eagles etc. depends on the tide. To find bears on the beach we need a beach thus the low tide requirement and because of this the trip may be before or after dinner. The boats are limited to four guests so this is a more personal tour than other lodges provide. Also there are normally on eight guest in the lodge.

Arrival at Grizzly Bear Lodge 1 of 20

seaplane landing

grizzly-bear-lodgePeder, Ann and family arrived at Grizzly Bear Lodge in July for three nights. This meant a day with the grizzly bears, a day whale watching and the third day with Trapper Rick on a unique wild river, the Kakweikan. All the photos for the next twenty days of blogging were provided by David. The blog content is my creation and will hopefully tell the story of a good time had by all. First is how do they provide a photo of a plane landing on the day they arrived if they were on the plane. Obviously they were not on this plane because we frequently have two planes arriving minutes apart. The planes leave from Campbell River for the forty-five minute flight to Grizzly Bear Lodge.
